The World Port Center is a collective building with various (main) offices on the Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam. The iconic skyscraper houses the Port of Rotterdam Authority, VARO Energy Netherlands and Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region, among others. Completed in 2000, the WPC was ready for a new phase. The old facilities and functionalities of the collective building no longer met today's needs. It also lacked unity due to several minor upgrades and renovations over the years.

A new jacket

Architectural firm Mecanoo was asked to make the first floor and part of the second floor fit today's needs. This also included the terrace of the World Port Center. What had to be carefully considered in the design was the balance between design, functionality and the WELL Building Standard. All this to ensure that the WPC would become one of the most sustainable, healthy and safest office buildings in the Netherlands.

Of course, the choice of furniture also played a big role in this. It had to reflect the powerful character of the port. Consider the choice of steel, leather, rope and good craftsmanship.

Realization of the design

Our team was initially asked by Savills Building & Project Consultancy to think about the loose terrace furniture. After Mecanoo joined as architect, we used our expertise in loose furniture to advise on the rest of the project as well. For example, our team helped with product choices of all the loose furniture, inventory and reuse of the existing furniture, and monitoring the schedule and budget.

In the restaurant, a good fit between the new furniture and the existing furniture was sought. The right color scheme also had to be carefully considered. The choice therefore fell on the Vitra Chaise Tout Bois chair in natural oak lacquered.

The tough leather Hammock chairs have been given a prominent place in the reception area, reflecting the powerful character of the port. In the meeting rooms, this has been translated into the Vitra Armchair Direction.
